India is the land of festivals. The people of India celebrate many festivals with great pomp and joy. Diwali is the festival of light which is one of the most important festivals in the Hindu religion.

Diwali is also known as Deepavali, a lighting festival of the Hindu religion which is celebrated with great joy and harmony not only in India but across the globe.

It comes every year during the month of October or November after the end of the rainy season. It is known as the Festival of Lights. On this day, People buy small clay cups called Dias, and candles, and illuminate their houses. This festival is a symbol of the victory of light over darkness.

People worship Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha with great reverence in the evening on this day. Especially, children look forward to this festival since they buy toys and crackers on this day and get to burst their favorite crackers and eat delicious foods whatever they wish.

The origin of Diwali

As per Hindu mythology, it is said that Lord Rama along with his wife Sita and brother Lakshmana returned to Ayodhya after fourteen years of exile. He got victory over Ravana who was a very powerful demon king of Lanka.

On Lord Rama’s return, the people of Ayodhya illuminate their cities and villages to welcome him and show their joy. Since then this festival is observed as Diwali. This gives us the message of the triumph of good over evil.

Importance of Diwali

This festival falls in Kartik(month) on Amavasya day after the rainy season. New crops of paddy become ready. Farmers are seen as very happy to see their crops.

People remain busy for days in cleaning and whitewashing their houses and decorating them with flowers and lights.

It is an old belief that the goddess Lakshmi visits people’s houses on Diwali night to bless them. Similarly, on Dhanteras one day before Diwali as people also make purchases.

Diwali is also observed as the hygienic point. The season of malaria and the rain is over. The white-washing of houses and buildings drives away the mosquito and makes houses free from mosquitoes.

How Diwali is celebrated?

Children are seen as very happy on this day. They get holidays from school. Great preparations are made for this day. Women get up early on this day.

She gets into preparing many kinds of sweets and other food items. People buy small clay cups called Diyas. In the evening people filled these Diyas with mustard oil or ghee and illuminate their homes.

The whole houses become bright and light. In cities and towns, people use electric bulbs for lighting their homes. Everything looks bright and beautiful. A huge amount of smoke released during the bursting of crackers causes too much pollution in the air that affects our lives. They should understand the need for Diwali free from crackers and pollution. They can use a very little amount of crackers if wish but keep in mind pollution.

Some people drink too much wine on this day. They quarrel with their family and other people. These bad activities disrupt peace within society. These bad activities must be prevented.

There is also one bad custom. People think that he should gamble to try his luck. Most gamblers lose their money and thus become poor. Government should ban this bad practice.
